The latest edition of the All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio featured a lively and informative discussion led by DJ Sparky and Patty from Focal Community Services.
Special guest Adam from My Plan Partners returned to the program to dive deeper into the changes around Short-Term Accommodation (STA), commonly known as respite. Adam explained that STA provides a temporary break for both participants and their carers, but recent updates from October 2023 have altered what’s covered.
Notably, food, groceries, and travel to and from accommodation are no longer included in STA funding unless it’s a group setting. Importantly, individuals living independently or in Supported Independent Living (SIL) arrangements may no longer qualify for STA under the updated guidelines. Adam emphasized the need for participants to check their NDIS plans and speak with their plan managers for clarification before booking any STA services.
Following the STA discussion, Patty highlighted World Health Day with nine simple daily wellness tips. These included drinking plenty of water, moving regularly, eating smartly, taking time to breathe, talking it out when stressed, accepting help, enjoying hobbies, connecting with others, and ensuring proper rest.
Patty stressed the importance of balance: “It’s not about being perfect — just making small changes that make a big difference.”
Listeners were reminded that maintaining mental and physical health is vital and that taking small steps each day can lead to a healthier, happier life.
The All Ability Hour wrapped up with a teaser for next week’s show, promising more helpful tips and community updates.
