Ipswich’s creative community is coming together this week for the U3A Exhibition at the Ipswich Community Gallery, celebrating local photography — with a musical twist.

Launching this Thursday at the Ipswich Community Gallery in D’Arcy Doyle Place, the exhibition showcases the diverse work of local artists from the U3A Photography Club, led by well-known local tutor Wayne MacDonald.

Photographer Anne, representing the club, said the group is thriving.

“We go on photo shoots and do workshops — it’s a great way to learn, share ideas, and connect with people who love photography,” she said. “There are around 60 members, and everyone brings something different.”

The exhibition also features works from the painting and drawing groups, highlighting the creative depth of Ipswich’s arts scene. Entry is free, with the official opening on Saturday at 2pm, where visitors can enjoy a live performance by the U3A Ukulele Group.

Group members Karen and Bob said they’ve been playing together for over six years after learning through U3A.

“It’s such a social instrument — we play and sing, visit aged care homes, and perform at community events,” Karen said. “We love seeing people smile and sing along.”

Glenn Smith, who co-hosts Get Your Arts Into Gear on West Bremer Radio, said the event perfectly captures the city’s creative energy.

“It’s art, music, and community all in one place,” he said. “A great reminder that Ipswich’s arts scene is thriving.”

The U3A Exhibition runs from Thursday with the official opening and ukulele performance on Saturday at 2pm. Entry is free.
