Well, the most heavenly of musicals is about to descend on southeast Queensland from February next year. Now, I have enjoyed my next guest in shows like We Will Rock You, Chicago, 9 to 5 the Musical, and I am so looking forward to her taking me to heaven this time around.
I’m talking about the one and only Casey Donovan, who is going to be taking up the role of Dolores van Cartier.
00:28
the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act the musical. And Casey is on the line. Good morning, Casey. Good morning. How are you? Oh, look, I’m excited for this.
I’ve heard some of the music and it is absolutely fabulous. Isn’t it? It’s fabulous, baby, one might say. Well, that’s true. I’m.
00:44
trying to parody all the songs here for you. I love it. Keep them coming. As I said, this is one of the biggest roles that you’ve undertaken.
Now, what drew you to wanting to do this? It really is. Look, lots of things drew me to play this. You know, it was made famous by whoopie Goldberg. The music is amazing.
The storyline is one that I am very, very familiar with. You know, I grew up watching sister act one and two, and maybe back then I planted a seed that one day I’d love to play this character.
01:13
But, um, you know, so many things have drawn me to this show and it’s just such an amazing show. It’s, you know, it’s uplifting. It’s joyful. It’s fun.
It’s a feel good. And I just, I cannot wait to be donning a habit. No. And of course the girl, the girls in the nunnery are going to have a fantastic time with this show.
They surely are. And I’ve been listening to the soundtrack. Of course, the songs are written by Alan Menken, who has written songs for Disney’s Aladdin, Enchanted, The Little Mermaid, and many more. And
01:42
you know, he’s done a modern Motown soul disco twist on the music from this show. So yeah, I’m, I’m looking forward to joining a content.
Yeah. And of course, uh, uh, joining up with the likes of Genevieve Lemon and the fantastic leggy Rhonda Burchmore. I mean, you’re in good pedigree there.
You know what? I’ve been able to be in so many amazing shows with strong female leads. And you know, this show doesn’t falter from that, you know, working on.
02:09
alongside Genevieve and Rhonda is just going to be such an amazing experience and one that I can learn from and one that I can enjoy and know that I am in the company of some of Australia’s best.
Yeah. And of course, when you’re backstage, you can trade stories from the African jungle. We sure bloody can. Now that’s going to follow you around for a while. It sure is. And you know, being a part of the, I’m a celebrity.
02:37
I guess family is just, you know, it’s a joy. We get to go in there and we get to raise money for charities of our choice.
And I think, you know, a little bit of embarrassment and eating some, you know, things that we would could never think of eating in our, in our real lives is, you know, it’s a bond that we all, it’s a lived experience.
We can all, all sit back and laugh about now. Now, obviously when people go along to see Sister Act the musical,
03:00
They’re not going to see Whoopi Goldberg up there because you’re going to put your own spin on it too, aren’t you? I am and I love that about the musical theatre world is that you know as much as I love Whoopi’s rendition of Dolores van Cartier I get to yeah as an actor I get to explore that and and see what that feels like in my skin and my body and you know Whoopi is witty and fast and quick and you know there’s a sassiness but also this
03:27
vulnerability of being back in a convent which I you know it will be lovely to play with as an actor so um you know I’ll try and try and put a little bit of me into it um but yeah we’re just I can’t wait to get it on the floor and get into rehearsals and just see what comes of it and then you know see you guys at the QPAC in February. Exactly and of course as one of the songs in the show says it’s good to be a nun. Sure bloody is.
03:56
Well look, I’ll tell you what, I am looking forward to seeing it. And last time I think I saw you were in Brisbane was in nine to five, the musical. That was a fantastic show too. Oh, it was such a beautiful show and Judy will always have a very special place in my heart and yeah, to be able to back it up with a show like sister act, I think it’s yeah, it’s just going to be amazing. And I love that I can keep, you know, stepping into these really strong, beautiful roles and yeah, keep learning my craft and getting out there and
04:25
entertaining people because that’s what it’s all about. And that’s what you do so well and I think you’ve learned a heck of a lot already and you are an artist who is you know commanding the stage in your own right and I just love that about you, you get up there and you give everything you’ve got. I do, eight times a week so I try to but yeah you know I just I love my job and I love being able to get out there and entertain and just enjoy and love what we do and know that it brings people
04:54
