For people with disabilities under the NDIS, finding the right independent living option can be a complex process. In the latest episode of the All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio, host DJ Sparky and guest Patty from Focal Community Services broke down the different housing options available and the steps required to access them.
“Many families don’t know where to start when considering independent living for their loved ones,” Patty said. “NDIS offers several options, depending on the level of support required.”
Housing Options Under NDIS
- Supported Independent Living (SIL) – Provides 24/7 support for individuals who require assistance in daily living.
- Host Family Model – Individuals live with a host family who assists with day-to-day tasks, offering a less intensive but structured support environment.
- Individual Living Options (ILO) – Allows for tailored support, such as assistance for a few hours a day, while promoting greater independence.
- Short-Term and Medium-Term Accommodation – Provides respite care or transitional housing for people moving towards independent living.
How to Apply for NDIS Housing Support
- Ensure housing goals are included in the NDIS plan.
- Complete the NDIS Independent Living Options Form with a support coordinator.
- Obtain an Occupational Therapist (OT) assessment, which evaluates the individual’s ability to live independently.
- Gather reports from health professionals and service providers to support the application.
- Submit the application, keeping in mind that processing can take up to six months.
“Education is key,” Patty emphasised. “Knowing what’s available and how to apply ensures better outcomes for people with disabilities.”
The All Ability Hour continues next week with a special guest sharing their personal journey of independent living.
