A popular Australia Day tradition is set to return in Ipswich, with residents invited to cool off for free at all council-owned swimming pools on Monday 26 January.
Ipswich City Council has confirmed that free entry will be available from 10am to 4pm at its swim centres, giving families and friends the chance to beat the heat and enjoy the day together.
Community and Sport Committee Chairperson Cr Jacob Madsen said the initiative had been a long-standing and well-loved part of Australia Day celebrations in the city.
“Since 1997, council has marked Australia Day with free entry to all council-owned pools,” Cr Madsen said.
“It has become a popular tradition with residents and we are pleased to be carrying it forward this year.
“This is a great way to enjoy our city’s fantastic pool facilities on what is usually a really hot day, particularly for new residents who may not have had the chance to check them out yet.”
Cr Madsen encouraged residents to stay sun safe on the day by remembering to slip, slop and slap, while enjoying the relaxed, community-focused atmosphere.
For those looking to cool off beyond Australia Day, council also reminded residents there are free water play areas available year-round across the city, including Orion Lagoon, Bob Gamble Park, Ripley Splash ‘n’ Play, Tulmur Place and the White Rock Splash Pad.
Free Australia Day pool entry applies at the following council-owned swim centres:
- Bundamba Swim Centre
- Goodna Aquatic Centre
- Rosewood Aquatic Centre
- Georgie Conway Leichhardt Community Swim Centre
Australia Day free entry runs from 10am to 4pm on Monday 26 January.
