Ipswich’s Community Art Gallery is set to host a breathtaking glass art exhibition by Mark George, showcasing the intricate and mesmerising world of glassblowing. Titled “Thank You Ipswich”, the exhibition opens this Friday, with a public launch event on Saturday at 3pm.

George, who hails from Thornlands, has been refining his glass artistry for years, attending master glassblowing classes in Canberra and Adelaide. His journey into glassblowing began unexpectedly after a workshop with his wife, Penny, where he discovered a natural talent for the craft.

“It was something my wife wanted to try, but the instructors thought I had done it before,” said George. “I kept going back and learning more, and now I can’t stop.”

Glassblowing, an ancient and highly skilled art form, requires working with molten glass at temperatures over 600 degrees Celsius. George describes the process as challenging yet captivating, allowing endless creative expression.

“You’re working with extreme heat, but the more you understand the material, the more you can create,” he explained.

His latest exhibition celebrates his artistic journey, with Ipswich Arts Connect playing a crucial role in supporting his growth.

“Ipswich Arts Connect gave me confidence and encouragement to keep pushing my craft,” said George.

Visitors can expect a stunning array of glass creations, from decorative pieces to conceptual works. George also revealed his ambition to design custom trophies for motorsports, blending his love for racing with his artistic skills.

The exhibition runs for a week and a half at the Ipswich Community Art Gallery. Entry is free, and guests can enjoy catering by Jill from Arts Connect during the Saturday launch.
