The Ipswich arts community is buzzing this week, with local talent making its mark across regional festivals and home-grown stages.

The Boonah Arts Festival is now underway, showcasing a wide range of visual and performing arts. Several Ipswich artists have been shortlisted for awards, including Deb Chilton, Tony McIsaac, Carol Compton-Hands, and Di Carter, alongside Arts Connect regular Glenn Smith.

“It’s amazing to see so many Ipswich names recognised,” Smith said on West Bremer Radio’s Get Your Arts in Gear. “But whether you’re shortlisted or not, the standard of work is outstanding. Competitions should be about fun and networking – not just winning.”

The conversation also highlighted Ipswich artists featuring in the Gold Coast Art Awards, with entries from Linda Sengjov, Julia Maddix, and Carter joining Smith on the list.

Back home, the local theatre scene is equally vibrant. The Cambrian Centre continues its run of Pass Remote, while Ipswich Little Theatre prepares for Secret Bridesmaids’ Business in September. Meanwhile, Ipswich Musical Theatre Company will soon stage the internationally acclaimed musical Come From Away.

“Please don’t sit at home on a Friday night and say there’s nothing to do,” co-host DJ Sparky said. “There’s heaps happening – comedies, musicals, raffles, and everything in between.”

Adding to the excitement, Smith and Sparky revealed early plans for the Get Your Arts in Gear Awards – a light-hearted but meaningful celebration of Ipswich’s creative achievements.

“We’re keeping it fun but also true to the people and groups that make our arts scene so special,” Smith said.

With festivals, theatre, and a brand-new awards night on the horizon, Ipswich’s creative community continues to prove it’s one of the most vibrant in Queensland.
