As Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches, Bundamba MP Lance McCallum has praised the Ipswich community for its strong preparation efforts, while also advocating for urgent action on local transport and health services.

Cyclone Alfred: Community Steps Up

With the cyclone set to cross the coast as a Category 2 system at 7am Friday, Ipswich is expected to experience damaging winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding. McCallum has urged residents to stay informed via disaster.qld.gov.au and the Ipswich City Council Disaster Dashboard.

“Locals have been out securing properties, collecting sandbags, and clearing debris,” he said. “Now’s the time to charge devices, store water, and prepare emergency kits.”

Forecasts indicate wind gusts over 130 km/h, with the storm surge coinciding with high tide, increasing flood risks.

Push for Better Bus Services in Ripley Valley

McCallum and Ipswich MP Jennifer Howard are continuing their campaign for improved bus services for Ripley Valley students, highlighting wait times of up to 90 minutes.

“Students are getting home far too late, and teachers are staying back to supervise,” he said. “We’re fighting for better services—locals can sign our petition on my website.”

Concerns Over Ipswich Hospital Expansion Delay

McCallum also raised alarms over the state government’s pause on the $1 billion Ipswich Hospital expansion, which was set to deliver 200 extra beds and an upgraded emergency department.

“This delay means longer wait times and more pressure on staff,” he said. “We’re demanding the government restart work immediately.”
