Ipswich Cricket President Simon Emmerson provided an exciting recap of the past weekend’s games and offered a look ahead at upcoming fixtures. The weekend featured strong performances from both the men’s and women’s Hornets teams.
In men’s first grade, four debutantes made their mark against Wests, with Jarrod Odanski taking a stunning five-wicket haul, including a wicket with his very first red ball. Wests posted 227 runs, while Ipswich lost two quick wickets to sit at 2 for 20, leaving the game evenly poised. Nemerson expressed confidence in his team’s chances, stating, “Just need a couple of partnerships to get started.”
In second grade, Ipswich returned to Baxter Oval for the first time this season. The slow outfield saw the Lambs rolled for 167, which Nemerson estimated to be closer to 200 under normal conditions. “Wests are 0 for 51, but with some early breakthroughs next week, our boys will be right in it,” he said.
Unfortunately, the Taverners’ season continues to slip, with the team recording just one win from six games. However, Nemerson remains hopeful, acknowledging their close losses and the chance to bounce back soon.
The Hornets women also had a mixed weekend. After a narrow loss to competition leaders Norths in T20 action, the team rebounded with a commanding 100-run win over Sandgate. “It’ll be great confidence for the girls heading into more T20 matches this weekend,” Nemerson said. The younger Rebecca McCombs Cup team, made up of local junior players, showed promising strides despite a loss to Wests.
Upcoming fixtures include ongoing men’s matches against Wests, while the women’s teams will face off against Wynnum, Valleys, and University this weekend.
