With Term 4 kicking off, Ipswich police are reminding drivers to exercise caution around school zones as children return to school. Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy spoke during West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance and compliance with road safety measures.

“Today, many happy parents are sending their kids back to school, and we want to remind all motorists that school zones are now in effect,” said Senior Constable Sheedy. “With more children on foot, in cars, or using public transport, it’s crucial to slow down and be aware of their presence.”

Sheedy highlighted that standard school zone operating times across Ipswich are between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with some zones enforcing 40 km/h speed limits all day, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. She advised drivers to stay mindful of school signs, including parking limits, yellow edge lines where stopping is prohibited, and no-parking or bus zones.

“Pick-up and drop-off times can create congested and busy areas around schools,” Sheedy added. “Drivers need to be especially observant and avoid distractions to ensure the safety of children.”

Motorists are urged to respect school crossing supervisors and always obey their directions. In addition, police will continue to monitor traffic around schools during peak hours to ensure compliance with road rules.

For more information on back-to-school road safety, residents are encouraged to visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads website or the Queensland Police Service website.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. By slowing down and being aware of our surroundings, we can help protect our kids,” Sheedy concluded.

Residents with information for police are encouraged to contact Policelink at 13 14 44 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
