As Ipswich residents wrap up holiday travels, Senior Constable Shantelle Dowell from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit reminds motorists to prioritise road safety and avoid the fatal five behaviours.
“Police are maintaining a high visibility presence on local roads and targeting the fatal five: speeding, seatbelts, fatigue, distraction, and drink or drug driving,” said Senior Constable Dowell. “These behaviours significantly increase the risk of serious or fatal incidents.”
With families returning from holidays and preparing for the new school year, roads are expected to be busier than usual. Police recommend motorists take these precautions:
- Rest regularly: Take breaks to combat fatigue.
- Obey speed limits: Adjust your speed to conditions.
- Plan your journey: Let family or friends know your travel plans.
- Check weather and road conditions: Ensure safe passage on country roads with loose gravel or soft edges.
- Be wildlife aware: Watch for animals, especially on regional roads.
Drivers are also urged to be extra cautious at railway crossings. “Don’t proceed until the lights are off, even if the boom gate is up,” Senior Constable Dowell warned.
Queensland Police emphasize that road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Data shows serious crashes can be significantly reduced when motorists avoid risky behaviors like distracted driving and speeding.
