The Ipswich Australia Day Awards are just around the corner, and local figures like Donna Cavanagh and Glenn Smith, both past recipients, are urging the community to nominate individuals who have made outstanding contributions. Glenn, Ipswich Citizen of the Year 2021, and Donna, 2023 Citizen of the Year, have highlighted the significance of recognising those who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

“These awards aren’t about fame or fortune; they’re about celebrating the everyday heroes who give back to their communities,” said Glenn. “Ipswich is fortunate to have so many volunteers who dedicate their time and energy without expecting anything in return.”

Donna, known for her work with Helping Support Minds, agreed, adding that winning the award has opened doors to further her community initiatives. “Being recognized gives credibility, and it’s helped me connect with resources to continue helping the homeless and disadvantaged.”

Nominations are now open for several categories, including Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen, Young Citizen, Cultural Award, Sport and Recreation, and Community Group of the Year. Donna and Glenn both stress the importance of recognizing those who make Ipswich a better place through their selfless efforts.

“Nominate someone who’s out there making a difference,” Glenn said. “It’s not just about the title—it’s about encouraging people to keep doing the great work they’re already doing.”

Nominations close on 3rd November 2024, with the award ceremony set for Australia Day 2024. Residents can submit their nominations through the Ipswich City Council website, ensuring that deserving individuals and groups receive the recognition they’ve earned.

“Let’s make sure we shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes,” Donna concluded. “They deserve it.”
