Ipswich City Council is inviting residents to participate in a consultation on local laws as part of its ongoing effort to update and refine the city’s legal framework. Mayor Teresa Harding emphasised the importance of community involvement during her appearance on West Bremer Radio, noting that seven of the city’s 14 local laws require updates to align with the new planning scheme.

The consultation, which begins on August 30 via the Shape Your Ipswich website, is crucial to ensure that the city’s legal language is consistent and effective. Mayor Harding stressed that while most changes involve minor updates like renaming zones, the council is eager to hear from residents on other potential amendments to ensure that the laws meet the community’s needs.

In addition to discussing the consultation, Mayor Harding provided updates on other significant local projects. The restoration of Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve, which was severely damaged by the 2022 floods, is progressing well. The reserve is set to reopen in December, featuring new cultural elements, solar lighting, and spaces for food trucks, making it more flood-resilient and versatile for community events.

On the cultural front, the 2024 Ipswich Art Awards are now open for entries, with already over 100 submissions received. The awards recognize a wide range of artistic expressions, from traditional painting to new media. Prizes include $1,500 for the People’s Choice Award and $3,000 for Best of Show. The public can view the art from November 1 to 9, with the awards ceremony kicking off the exhibition.

Mayor Harding also highlighted the recent observance of the 58th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, paying tribute to Vietnam veterans. Additionally, she celebrated local community events, including a successful pigeon show in Rosewood and the centenary of the Queensland Country Women’s Association Rosewood branch.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the local laws consultation to help shape the future of Ipswich.
