Ipswich’s All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio welcomed a special guest this week, with Tracy, a long-time client of Focal, taking to the airwaves to share her experiences. Tracy, who has verbal communication challenges, joined the show alongside her support worker, Amanda, to talk about how Focal’s services have helped her engage with the community.
Tracy, who uses a wheelchair, expressed her excitement for her upcoming Christmas dance performance, an event she has been rehearsing for as part of Focal’s community activities. When asked what she loves most about Focal, Tracy’s answer was simple: “Dancing and singing.”
The show highlighted the important role support workers play in the lives of people with disabilities. Amanda, a dedicated Focal support worker, discussed the day-to-day tasks she helps clients with, including shopping trips and social outings. “It’s about being caring and understanding,” said Amanda. “No two days are the same. It’s all about supporting them in their needs and goals.”
In addition to individual care, Amanda also runs a basketball program for Focal clients in partnership with Ipswich Force Basketball. The program encourages social interaction, physical activity, and skill-building, with clients showing significant progress in both their fitness and confidence. “Seeing them improve and love the game is incredibly rewarding,” Amanda added.
The segment offered a glimpse into the fulfillment that comes with being a support worker. Amanda shared her journey from working in marketing to joining Focal after being encouraged by a friend. “It was the best decision I made,” she said.
Focal continues to support the Ipswich community by empowering individuals with disabilities to live active, independent lives. The All Ability Hour serves as a platform to celebrate these achievements, showcasing the positive impact of inclusive programs and services.
