
Fourteen exceptional individuals and four dedicated community groups have been named finalists in the 2025 Ipswich Australia Day Awards, showcasing the remarkable contributions that make Ipswich a thriving and inclusive community.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding praised the nominees for their tireless efforts in fostering community spirit, inclusivity, and support for those in need.
“From enhancing cultural vibrancy to helping the less fortunate, these nominees embody the heart of what makes Ipswich a great place to live,” Mayor Harding said.
The finalists span six award categories: Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Cultural Award, Sport and Recreation Award, and Community Group of the Year. Winners will be announced at the Ipswich Australia Day Awards ceremony on January 22, 2025.
Highlights from the nominations include:
- Senior Citizen of the Year: Lyn McCoombes, who played a pivotal role in preserving Ipswich’s history through the Ipswich Historical Society; Brenda Ryan, founder of the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company; and Jan White, a lifelong advocate for palliative care.
- Young Citizen of the Year: Dallas Coventry-Scott, co-founder of Helping Our Homies Ipswich, and Ryan White, who raised $23,000 for charity through St Edmund’s College’s Skool 2 Schoolies bike ride.
- Cultural Award: Bradley Clarke, manager of West Bremer Radio; Kirsty O’Brien, a leader in public art and cultural initiatives; and John “Jomar” Nieva, a champion for multiculturalism.
- Sport and Recreation Award: Notables include Paris Olympics hockey umpire Stephen Rogers and taekwondo master Edward Scott.
- Community Group of the Year: Finalists include Helping Our Homies, Ipswich Special School’s senior sector, and Wounded Heroes Association Inc.
Councillor Pye Augustine noted the challenging task faced by judges in selecting winners from such a strong field.
“Ipswich is fortunate to have so many inspiring community members dedicated to improving the lives of others,” Cr Augustine said.
The awards ceremony will celebrate these outstanding contributions, reflecting the resilience, creativity, and generosity of Ipswich residents.
