The holiday spirit comes alive once more as It’s a Wonderful Life returns to the stage in Ipswich this December. Presented by Swich Up Productions, the beloved production offers a fresh take on the classic Christmas story with a radio-play format, immersing audiences in 1940s-style storytelling.
Director Adrian Carr expressed her excitement about the production’s return. “We’re thrilled to bring back It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s a timeless story of hope, community, and the impact one person can have on so many lives,” she said.
This year’s cast includes a heartwarming twist: real-life husband and wife Jesse and Elizabeth Warren star as George and Mary Bailey, the iconic couple from the story. “It’s wonderful to have them portray such a heartfelt relationship. Their chemistry truly brings the characters to life,” Carr shared.
Adding to the charm, the production features live sound effects created by foley artists Brendan Deakman and Tracey Spence, who use vintage-style props to recreate everything from footsteps to thunder. “It’s such a visual and auditory treat,” said cast member Simone Behrendorff. “Audiences will love seeing the magic of sound effects created live on stage.”
Performances will run from December 6 to 15 at Fire Station 101, with evening and matinee shows available. Tickets can be purchased online at Ipswich Civic Centre.
The show builds on the company’s growing reputation, following nine nominations at the Gold Palm Theatre Awards for their production of The Drowsy Chaperone. Looking ahead, Ipswich Musical Theatre Company plans to stage Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical in 2024.
Carr encourages Ipswich residents to make the play part of their Christmas tradition. “Whether you’re a fan of the classic movie or new to the story, this production is a magical way to celebrate the season.”
