Ipswich, May 31, 2024 – This morning, the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) launched its annual road safety campaign, Fatality Free Friday, urging Australians to pledge to drive safely with the slogan “Drive So Others Survive” (#DriveSOS).

Fatality Free Friday, a national initiative, aims to reduce road fatalities and injuries by encouraging drivers to commit to safe driving behaviors. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of being fit to drive, staying focused, scanning the road ahead, maintaining a safe distance, and adapting driving to road conditions.
The Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Ipswich City Council, Ipswich PCYC, Motorcycle Queensland, and the Queensland Motorcycle Council, is actively supporting the campaign. They are hosting a public event on Friday, May 31, from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Orion Shopping Centre, located at 1 Main Street, Springfield. The event is free and open to all.
Annually, over 1200 people lose their lives on Australian roads. The goal of Fatality Free Friday is to have zero road deaths in Australia for one day and to educate the community on the shared responsibility of road safety. Ipswich police have increased patrols to target the ‘Fatal Five’ contributing factors to road accidents: speeding, drink or drug driving, distraction, fatigue, and not wearing seat belts.
Participants at the Orion Shopping Centre event will have the opportunity to sign the inflatable vehicle as a symbol of their commitment to road safety. This gesture is a pledge to drive responsibly and promote safe driving within the community.
For more information or to take the road safety pledge, visit the Australian Road Safety Foundation website. Details on the Fatality Free Friday event can be obtained by contacting the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit at 3817 1351 or via email.
Mark your calendars for this crucial event, and remember: road safety starts with you. Join us on May 31 and drive so others survive.
