Jordan MP Charis Mullen has wrapped up her final State of Play segment for the year on West Bremer Radio, calling for stronger support for teachers, improved communication on new bus services, and community generosity as Christmas approaches.
With the festive season just weeks away, Ms Mullen said local politicians were deep in school award nights, graduations and community celebrations. But she also acknowledged the mounting pressures facing educators, following the second Queensland teachers’ strike in one EBA cycle—the first time in nearly 30 years.
“Teachers aren’t asking for the world,” Ms Mullen said. “They want safer classrooms, better support and the resources they need to teach well. The government has missed the point—this isn’t just about money.”
She criticised the LNP Government for failing to address teacher shortages, retention issues and safety concerns raised by staff. With the dispute now heading to arbitration, she said communities overwhelmingly stood with teachers seeking fair conditions.
Ms Mullen also urged residents to support the annual YMCA Christmas Appeal, with her Springfield Central office again acting as a donation point for toys and non-perishable food items.
“Cost-of-living pressures are hitting families hard,” she said. “If you can donate in any small way, it will make a big difference.”
The MP also addressed ongoing community confusion following the rollout of TransLink’s new bus service improvements. While four new routes began operating in November, several newly activated stops still have no infrastructure, signage or safe access.
“One stop near Augusta Parkway has been ‘activated’ but hasn’t actually been built—and there’s no matching stop across the road,” she said. “These issues affect young people who rely on buses to get to work.”
Ms Mullen is pushing TransLink for clarity and timelines and expects updates in the coming weeks.
As she signed off for the year, she thanked West Bremer Radio listeners for their engagement and wished the community a safe and happy Christmas.
