Bundamba MP Lance McCallum has welcomed the start of 2026 by outlining key priorities for Ipswich’s growing community, including education, youth engagement and affordable housing.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s State of Play program, Mr McCallum said the new school year had begun strongly, with record enrolments across local schools.
“It’s been great to welcome students back for another big year,” he said. “At Ripley Valley State Secondary College alone, more than 330 Year 7 students started this year, which is incredible for such a young school.”
With Ipswich continuing to be one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions, Mr McCallum said new education infrastructure was essential. He provided an update on the planned White Rock primary school, confirming that the design contract has been awarded and is due for completion in January, with construction tenders expected in June.
However, he expressed concern that the state government had not committed to firm construction or opening dates.
“Our community deserves certainty,” he said. “I’ll keep pressing for clear timelines so this school is ready as soon as possible.”
Mr McCallum also encouraged young residents to apply for his Bundamba Youth Advisory Council, with applications open until 21 March. The program is open to residents aged 16 to 22 and aims to give young people a voice in local decision-making while building leadership skills.
“You don’t need political experience,” he said. “You just need a genuine desire to help your community.”
On housing, Mr McCallum warned that social housing pressures were worsening across Ipswich. He said government data showed the local waitlist had increased by 15.8 per cent in the past year, with average waiting times now exceeding two years.
“Rents have risen by up to 81 per cent in some areas,” he said. “These figures represent real families and vulnerable people struggling to find secure housing.”
He criticised cuts to social housing projects and pledged to continue advocating for greater investment in affordable and public housing.
Mr McCallum encouraged residents to stay informed through his website and social media pages as he continues community consultations throughout 2026.
