As storm and bushfire season approaches, the Queensland Police Service is urging Ipswich residents to prepare early as part of Get Ready Week, a state-wide campaign helping Queenslanders plan for extreme weather.
Speaking on Crime Watch with West Bremer Radio, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit reminded locals that Queensland experiences more natural disasters than any other state in Australia.
“The weather doesn’t plan — but you can,” she said. “Preparation is the best defence when severe weather hits.”
The campaign, supported by Get Ready Queensland Ambassador Jonathan Thurston and QPS Acting Deputy Commissioner Stream, focuses on three key steps:
- Understand your risk – Identify which disasters are most likely to affect your area, such as floods, cyclones, or bushfires. Check your local council’s disaster management information and stay updated through weather alerts.
- Make a plan – Create a household emergency plan so everyone knows what to do, where to go, and who to contact. Don’t forget pets, important documents, and essential supplies.
- Pack a kit – Stock up on non-perishable food, water for at least three days, medications, first aid supplies, and waterproof storage for important papers like insurance documents.
Constable Sheedy said even small preparations can make a big difference.
“It only takes a few minutes to make a plan, and it gives you peace of mind knowing you’re ready,” she said.
Residents are encouraged to visit getready.qld.gov.au to access a free emergency planning tool and checklist.
“Understand your risk, make a plan, and pack a kit,” Constable Sheedy added. “It’s that simple — and it could save lives.”
