Queensland Police are urging rural property owners to tighten security and prevent farm-related theft, as crime targeting machinery, fuel, and livestock continues to be a concern.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, Sergeant Nadine Webster emphasized the importance of securing boundaries, farm equipment, and fuel supplies to deter criminals.

Protecting Property and Equipment

“Checking boundary fences, repairing damage immediately, and locking gates with heavy-duty chains are crucial steps in preventing unlawful access,” said Sergeant Webster.

Farmers are also advised to:
🔹 Install security lighting and CCTV around sheds and entrance points.
🔹 Keep stockyards out of sight from the main road but visible from the homestead.
🔹 Engrave tools and machinery in multiple places with unique identifiers.
🔹 Photograph and record details of valuable items, including serial and chassis numbers.
🔹 Secure machinery with chains and lockable fuel caps to prevent theft.

Fuel Theft on the Rise

With fuel prices soaring, theft—particularly of diesel—has become a major issue for rural communities.

Sergeant Webster recommends:
Storing minimal amounts of fuel in paddocks or unsecured areas.
Using lockable fuel caps and positioning tanks away from main roads.
Installing flow meters to monitor fuel usage and detect discrepancies.

Community Awareness Key to Prevention

Police are encouraging rural residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent crime.
