In a bid to address rising living costs, the Queensland Labor Party has unveiled a comprehensive plan to reduce petrol prices. This announcement is part of a broader suite of cost-of-living measures aimed at alleviating financial pressures on residents.

State MP for Bundamba Lance McCallum highlighted the Labor’s strategy during a recent interview on West Bremer Radio, stating that if re-elected in October, the government will implement policies to curb petrol price hikes. “We’re going to ban stations from raising the price of their fuel more than once per day and limit increases to five cents per litre,” McCallum explained. Additionally, Labor plans to establish 12 publicly owned petrol stations that will sell petrol on a cost-recovery basis to foster competition and drive down prices.

This initiative joins other measures already in place, such as 50-cent train fares and a 20% discount on vehicle registration, which collectively aim to mitigate the cost of living. “Queenslanders have told us that cost of living is their number one challenge and their number one priority,” McCallum said.

The 50-cent fare initiative has already proven popular, with McCallum personally taking advantage of the reduced fare to travel from Goodna to Brisbane for a cabinet meeting. The program saved Queenslanders over $1 million in fares on its first day, demonstrating substantial community support.

In addition to transport and fuel cost relief, McCallum also celebrated the state’s recent achievements in sports and infrastructure. He lauded the success of local athletes in the Paris Olympics, particularly 14-year-old gold medalist Arissa True and swimmer Molly O’Callaghan. These victories come as Queensland gears up to host the 2032 Olympics, an event already generating significant investment and economic activity in the region.

Furthermore, McCallum announced an $8.9 million investment in the Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing community facilities. This investment will support a variety of sports and recreational activities, benefiting local families and sports clubs.
