The Rosewood Library will close for approximately four weeks starting Monday, 11 November, to undergo essential roof repairs following significant hail damage sustained in October 2020. Ipswich City Council Community and Sport Committee Chairperson, Councillor Jacob Madsen, confirmed that the library is scheduled to reopen on Monday, 9 December 2024.
“The 2020 hailstorm caused extensive damage to the Rosewood Library’s roof and solar panels,” Councillor Madsen said. “While council coordinated with insurers at the time, high demand for roofing services delayed repairs until this year. During the closure, the entire roof and solar panels will be removed and replaced to protect the building from further damage and ensure public safety.”
The closure will affect all library services, including Smartlockers, library programs, and the returns chute. Councillor Madsen expressed appreciation for residents’ patience, adding that these upgrades will enhance the library’s facilities for the community’s long-term benefit.
Division 4 Councillor Jim Madden shared council’s plan to ensure minimal disruption for library users. “Loans due during the closure will automatically be extended until reopening, and users can borrow up to 40 items, double the usual limit, before the closure begins,” Councillor Madden said. He also encouraged users to explore the Digital Library for a range of eBooks, movies, and eAudiobooks.
Patrons can reserve items for pickup at other Ipswich library branches, with the Ipswich Central Library at Nicholas Street Precinct being the closest alternative. “Take advantage of three hours of free parking and enjoy the precinct’s popular eateries while visiting,” Councillor Madden suggested.
The repairs come as Ipswich libraries received high praise in the council’s annual survey, highlighting the value of these facilities to the community. For further information, visit IpswichLibraries.com.au or call (07) 3810 6666.
