Springfield-based Senator says it’s an honour and a responsibility to serve Queenslanders in key national roles
New Roles for Local Senator
Queensland Senator Paul Scarr, based in Springfield, has been appointed as the Shadow Minister for Immigration and Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs by Opposition Leader Sussan Ley.
“It’s a great honour to be given this responsibility,” Senator Scarr said. “These are complex portfolios that affect every Australian.”
Legal and Multicultural Experience an Asset
Senator Scarr brings significant experience to the role, having served as a senior member of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee. He also previously held the role of Shadow Assistant Minister for Multicultural Engagement, giving him strong connections with Queensland’s culturally diverse communities.
“I’ve worked hard to build relationships with multicultural groups who contribute so much to our region,” he added.
Balancing Immigration and Skilled Labour Concerns
With ongoing national debate around immigration numbers and the need for skilled labour, Senator Scarr acknowledged the complexity of the challenge.
“This is a nuanced policy area that demands thoughtful, reflective leadership and close engagement with the community,” he said. “Listening is key.”
Holding Government Accountable While Staying Constructive
Scarr emphasised the importance of providing a positive alternative vision to the current government, saying that he would remain constructive while also holding the Albanese Government to account.
“People expect us to listen, reflect, and rebuild—then take a values-based policy platform to the next election.”
Six-Year Senate Term Offers Stability
Having recently been re-elected, Senator Scarr is locked in for a six-year term and has committed to regular community engagement across Ipswich and Southeast Queensland.
“It’s a deep responsibility and moral obligation,” he said. “I’ll always be a phone call away for the people of this region.”
