With the rise in online marketplaces, Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit is urging residents to prioritise safety when buying or selling items online. Senior Constable Shantelle Dowell shared key advice during this week’s Crime Watch segment on West Bremer Radio, highlighting growing concerns around scams and unsafe transactions.

“Buying and selling items online has become increasingly popular, but it’s vital to exercise caution and follow safety measures to avoid becoming a victim,” said Senior Constable Dowell.

Recent reports indicate an increase in incidents involving the sale of cars and electronics where sellers have been targeted by criminals during face-to-face exchanges. The Ipswich Police recommend the following tips for safe transactions:

  1. Do Your Research: Verify the buyer or seller’s credibility. Pages with few followers or recent creation dates may be fake.
  2. Proof of Payment: Do not rely on screenshots; ensure funds are in your account before handing over items.
  3. Choose a Safe Meeting Location: Arrange to meet in public areas during daylight hours, preferably where CCTV is available.
  4. Avoid Home Transactions: Do not invite strangers into your home or meet buyers and sellers there.
  5. Record Details: Document the other party’s name, contact details, and vehicle registration.
  6. Trust Your Instincts: If anything feels off, cancel the meeting.
  7. Price Too Good to Be True? It probably is. Proceed with caution.

For additional advice, visit trusted sources like the Australian Cyber Security Centre or Scam Watch. Residents can also report suspicious activities via Policelink (131 444) or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

“With so many people buying and selling online, following these steps can help ensure safe and rewarding transactions,” emphasized Dowell.
