Ipswich residents are being encouraged to get hands-on with sustainability this weekend at the Ipswich Sustainability Weekend, hosted by the Ipswich Climate Action Group. The free, family-friendly event will take place at Tulmur Place from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, featuring a packed program of eco workshops, stalls, and entertainment focused on practical ways to live greener.

Event organisers Val and Robin said this year’s lineup includes everything from learning how to keep backyard chickens to workshops on raising native bees and eco-dyeing. A highlight of the day will be a talk from Craig Reucassel, well known for ABC’s War on Waste series, who will share insights on reducing waste and living sustainably.

Adding a lighthearted twist, the festival will also feature the “Ipswich Wedding of the Year” — a tongue-in-cheek performance where Ms Solar Panel marries Mr Battery. “It’s a fun way to highlight the importance of renewable energy,” said Val.

Visitors can browse stalls, join free sessions on sustainable living, and even grab a bargain at the event’s one-dollar op shop, which will offer clothes, books, and CDs to promote recycling and reuse.

The group is also running a Sustainability Art Competition in collaboration with Arts Connect Ipswich, showcasing creative pieces inspired by the theme of environmental responsibility.

Looking ahead, the Ipswich Climate Action Group will also host its annual “Trashion Parade” on Saturday, 8 November, celebrating upcycled fashion and wearable art made from recycled materials.

“This is about raising awareness in fun, creative ways,” said Robin. “We want people to see that everyone can do something — big or small — to help the planet.”
