The latest episode of the All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio highlighted the incredible talents and resilience of 15-year-old Maddie, a student at Ipswich Special School. Hosted by DJ Sparky and Patti from Focal, the show gave listeners an intimate look at Maddie’s journey, from being non-verbal until age seven to now singing and using Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to perform her favorite songs.

Maddie, who is also a participant at Focal, shared her love for skating, cooking, and fishing, with a special emphasis on her passion for singing. She even treated listeners to a rendition of “What a Wonderful World,” impressing everyone with her ability to sing while signing the lyrics in Auslan. Patti, who works closely with Maddie, revealed that this musical talent was discovered just a year and a half ago, and Maddie now sings weekly at a local singing school.

The program also featured a heartfelt conversation with Maddie’s mother, Chris, who spoke about the challenges and rewards of raising a child with disabilities. Chris shared her experience navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and her pride in Maddie’s achievements. She noted that Maddie’s progress, including her singing and involvement in various programs at Focal, has been remarkable.

Looking ahead, Maddie is nearing the end of her school years and exploring her future options, which include helping others with disabilities and further honing her life skills through programs at Focal. Chris emphasized the importance of keeping communication open and allowing Maddie’s interests to guide her next steps.

The episode closed with a tease of next week’s All Ability Hour, promising more inspiring stories and surprises.
