It is a Tuesday morning and we always like to check in with Mayor Theresa Harding to find out what has been happening in council. Good morning Theresa. Good morning, Good morning to listeners. It is good to talk to you. What a huge success. Trains, planes and autos was. Massive weekend. It’s great to see we had beautiful weather and it’s great to see people come out in their thousands for the whole three days. I was waiting to see you up there doing aerobatics in one of those tiger moss. No, I probably need an air stick bag. It was just amazing.

00:29
What the the area display was just incredible wasn’t it was just you hold your breath Yeah, you certainly do and you know It was great to see so many different organizations coming together to really celebrate those three forms of transport It is missile community groups such as you know, the grandchester model live steam and qpsr As well as the car clubs the muscle and classic cars of if switches and just different community groups coming together that ref base ambly

00:57
gave a lot of equipment and gave us two flyovers of two C-17s. So it’s really great when everyone works together. And we had so many business from outside of Ipswich as well. So I think the people of Ipswich really enjoyed the weekend as well as many people in South East Queensland. And I know the LAPS night was a huge success with people hanging off the rafters at the top of town. Yeah, it was great. It’s great to see the crowds there. We had the…

01:20
Park and Pose in the Nicolle Street precinct and Steve had his 1980 VC Procoma in there and then there was the there was the lapse events which went on to about 9.30 I think. Yes I know I heard them but anyway it was a great weekend and you know congratulations to everyone behind the scenes also congratulations to because obviously after colleges got colleges crossing got whacked in that last flood

01:45
event. It’s great to see that works are progressing there. Yeah, look, we do love Colleges Crossing Rec Reserve in Chouin and it was obviously flooded twice in 2022 and the bill for that’s about 14 million dollars. So we actually decided to go to the community to say, what would you like to be built there because we know it’s going to continue to flood there. And 80% of the residents said they wish to make it more flood resilient and so that’s what we’re doing. So our contractor, Ipaka, are now completely

02:15
the restoration and they’re now building what’s going to be there. And last week, myself and Councillor Cullinan and Councillor Madden actually went on site to have a bit of an inspection and look at what they’re doing. So it’s looking really great and I can’t wait till it’s finished. Yeah, and tell you what, I spent quite a few mornings down there with the old cafe that used to be down there, the portable cafe, and it’s a great spot just to sit, relax and chill out.

02:40
It is going to have a really lovely access to the waterway there. And obviously where the cafe was is now going to have a special area there for multiple food trucks to be, you know, that’s a little bit more, I guess, flood resilient than having something that’s actually piped in and, and, you know, as a fixture there and that, that, like that cafe was. So once it was completed, we’ll install the services, including power, solar lighting and irrigation. And we are expecting that to open sort of later this year, early next year. All right. Fantastic. Now, of course,

03:08
As we know, this month is Domestic Violence Month, and there’s been a number of important events highlighting this, hasn’t there? Yeah, certainly in recent weeks, there’s been a heightened national interest in family and domestic violence, and we’ve seen mass rallies across the country calling for more action and tougher penalties, and it’s an essential national conversation that we do have to have, and it’s also a local conversation. So here in Ipswich, last week we held the second Switch Speaks Out on Domestic and Family Violence Summit.

03:37
And we also had a march and a candlelit vigil with the Domestic Violence Action Center. And we’re very fortunate, we have a wonderful CEO there, Amy Carrington, who is a real leader in our community. And it’s just really important that we do have these conversations, that we do reach out and support people. And violence against women isn’t just physical violence. It could also be emotional, psychological, financial, sexual or social coercive control. So it’s really clear that we will not.

04:04
up with any type of violence in Ipswich. So I think that people have been involved in that and there’s so many people who do support some, you know, people who are the victims of family domestic violence in Ipswich. Yes and of course it’s not just for women, it’s also for men to be a part of this drive as well so that we can also instil a much better society for our younger people growing up. Yeah look men and women are victims of domestic and family violence and we do need

04:30
part of the solution is for men and women to work together for a much needed change in the future. Yes, now of course just around the corner not too far away, the Yip Switch show, I know you’re getting excited. I love the Yip Switch show and we’re looking forward to it and you can tell this is happening because the temperatures are a bit cooler and you always know the shows around the corner when the temperature gets a bit cooler. We know that from the 2021 Yip Switch show that it brought an economic return of nearly a million dollars to our city so and the shows are getting

04:59
bigger and bigger each year. So really looking forward to the three day vets from the 17th to the 19th of May. And what’s your first go to as soon as you go through the gates? Well I like my craft so I always check out the sewing, the quilting, the crocheting, the embroidery and also look at the cooking section. I always go there first of all I love looking at the animals and the arts as well so it’s always a fun time and I am putting in a crocheted rug.

05:26
Oh, as well. So first prize is $5. So you never know what might happen. Well, the the Merrill crocheted rug. I put in some a crochet piece of work at the Rosewood show last year. And one piece came first and one piece didn’t. So I hopefully I’ll just each year I just try to improve and do something a little bit better, a bit more complicated. Well, I look forward to that. No doubt you probably spend a month wages just.

05:55
going through there and buying up all of these wonderful items. Oh, look, it’s great. I think the other thing with the show is it’s great to connect with other people. I think people just like to wander and see people they may not have seen for a couple of years and catch up and say hello. And yeah, it’s a really nice gathering for the community. Yes. All right. Well, the Ipswich show and of course, West Bremer Radio will be broadcasting out there all three days from the Pavilion right next to the main ring. So no doubt you’ll pop down at some stage and have a chat with us.

06:22
Yeah, you’ve got a great posse that you have there every show. Great location overlooking all the everything that goes on. That’s right. And we get to see everything that goes on in the ring. So we’re we’re and we’ve also got a cafe right there in the same building. So I do. They do great tips there. So I’ll tell you what, I put on at least five kilos when I’m at the show. Now, before we let you go, there’s been a lot of chatter on social media about the North Ipswich Reserve development.

06:52
Where does that stand at the moment? Do you remember that Council secured $20 million as part of the 2022 federal election from Shane Newman? Council had to go through quite a few hoops and then we received $10 million from the state government, which means Council also put in $10 million. So it was actually during the election period during February when the federal government gave Council the funding agreement to sign off on, which we did do, and now we’re working with the state on signing off on.

07:21
on that funding agreement. Originally, we did want to build a $220 million stadium. That money’s just not coming from any level of government. So we have secured $40 million. So we will have a staged approach. So we won’t be building the stadium all at once. So the designs are being redone and there’ll be a staged approach and that new architecture design will be appointed next month in June. All right, and you hope to have shovels in the ground what next year?

07:49
look we hope we have to work around the footy season but it’d be great to have the first stage completed for the 2026 season. Oh fantastic well at least people have got an idea it’s still progressing and you know hopefully stage one by around about mid 2026. Yeah look stage one will be delivering the stadium in stages so that first will be knocking down the current grandstands and the current change rooms so we’ll build a new grandstand with the change rooms, the gym, the multipurpose facilities.

08:16
a full media suite and a broadcast standard lighting and also a broadcast platform with a big screen so we can attract those NRL games but just the lighting itself is going to be seven million dollars to put in that that broadcast standard lighting so it’ll be it’ll be great to have those new facilities for the change rooms and seating for people as well. I was going to offer to come and hold up a PortaFlood light but I don’t think that’ll do it. Listen always good to chat to you and we’ll look forward to doing it again next week.

08:45
Thanks a lot, Jaymo and thanks, listeners. There we go, Mayor Theresa Harding joining us.
