Wendy Bourne, the newly elected MP for Ipswich West, has hit the ground running following her first sitting of Parliament. Bourne described delivering her maiden speech as an emotional milestone, especially with her family present in the chamber. “It was an unforgettable experience, though we sat until just after midnight to ensure all new members had their opportunity to speak,” she shared.
New Role as Shadow Assistant Minister
Bourne has been appointed Shadow Assistant Minister for State and Regional Development and Jobs. “I’m honored to focus on growing the economy and creating jobs, particularly for Ipswich West residents,” she said. She also joins the Education, Arts, and Communities Committee, overseeing key issues such as domestic violence, child safety, and education. With 23 schools in her electorate, Bourne emphasized the importance of this role in addressing community needs.
Community Highlights
Bourne recently attended Ipswich City Council’s citizenship ceremony, welcoming 299 new Australians from 43 countries. “It was a beautiful event showcasing Ipswich’s diversity,” she noted.
She also participated in the Ipswich Coal Miners Memorial, honoring 184 miners who lost their lives in the industry. Bourne praised the involvement of Ripley State Secondary College students, saying their attendance was vital for preserving the history and significance of mining in the region.
Office Open for Constituents
Bourne’s electorate office in the Brassall Shopping Centre is now operational. “We welcome everyone to drop in for a chat or assistance with any issues,” she said, inviting constituents to engage with her team.
As 2024 draws to a close, Bourne extended a Christmas message, urging residents to stay safe during the festive season. “Enjoy time with loved ones, but remember, if it’s flooded, forget it,” she advised.
Looking Ahead
With her focus set on jobs, education, and community well-being, Bourne is eager to continue advocating for Ipswich West into 2025.
