Harmony Lindsay, a 19-year-old Wakaid Badulgal (Torres Strait Islander) woman and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, has announced her candidacy for Ipswich West in the upcoming Queensland state election. Despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of her father to suicide at a young age, Lindsay has emerged as a passionate advocate for young people, determined to address key issues like housing affordability, employment, and climate change.
Currently working in customer service, Lindsay is exploring a future in animal services or politics. Her campaign is focused on policies that aim to improve the lives of young Australians, particularly through the legalisation of cannabis and the expansion of the hemp industry. “Housing, employment, and climate change are major concerns for young people today,” Lindsay said. “By legalising cannabis and freeing up the hemp industry, we can address these issues head-on, creating jobs, affordable housing, and promoting sustainable industries.”
Lindsay’s entry into politics follows a recent shift in Ipswich West, a seat previously considered a safe Labor stronghold, but now held by the LNP. The electorate covers 365 square kilometres, including North Ipswich, Brassall, Leichhardt, Karalee, and Rosewood, and is home to the Amberley Air Force Base.
As one of the youngest candidates, Lindsay brings a fresh perspective to the race, aiming to champion the voices of young Australians and Indigenous communities. She is committed to creating a more equitable future for Ipswich West, focusing on policies that promote sustainability, economic opportunity, and social justice.
